24 hour Blood Pressure

188 Medical

24-Hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) is only available to existing patients of the clinic.

What is 24 hour Blood Pressure Monitor?

24-Hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) is designed to monitor your blood pressure (BP) for 24 hours, including at night. In general, this device takes a reading every 15 minutes during the day and every 30 minutes during the night.

24-hour BP readings are more reliable than a one off reading. Patients often experience “white coat” hypertension (elevated BP in the presence of a doctor) and are wrongly diagnosed with high BP. In addition, multiple readings are useful for evaluating the effectiveness of high blood pressure treatments in patients who have commenced medication or other therapy.

A portable monitor is worn on a belt connected to a standard cuff on the upper arm. When complete, the device is linked to a computer that prepares a report of the time of day and average systolic and diastolic blood pressures. You will be asked to fill out a diary indicating your activities over the 24 hour period so that BP changes can be linked to your active or resting state.

At the end of the 24 hour period, the machine and diary is returned to the clinic and the blood pressure information is transferred onto a computer.

How does it work?

The Practice nurse or doctor will fit the monitor and explain the procedure at the time of consultation. Make sure that sensible attire is worn such as a button down blouse or shirt that is loose on the arms or short-sleeved. You cannot shower or bathe while wearing the unit.
Blood pressure monitoring is extremely safe. Some people experience slight pain or a rash on the upper arm where the pressure cuff is located. The cuff can feel quite tight around the arm, but not painful.

After 24 hours of monitoring, you will take the machine and your diary to the Clinic. The blood pressure information is transferred from the monitor to a computer.
The doctor will then review the result and explain to you if your treatment program is working or if adjustments need to be done in your medicines.
